Short, Mobile Courses for Busy Clinicians

The Client Need

"Once COVID-19 began to spread, we realized we needed a bite-sized, just-in-time way to introduce and demonstrate key communication skills to busy clinicians so they could have better conversations with patients and their families."

- Healthcare Non-Profit

The Design

Three ultra-short courses in which clinicians observe model physician / patient conversations and the target skills employed, and critique contrasting, imperfect conversations, comparing their own impressions with an expert’s. Learners see how different conversations impact patients.

Audience: Busy, stressed physicians
Skills in Focus: Using effective communication; listening; empathy; aligning patient goals and values with treatment
Features: On-demand, mobile course; nano-learning; Observe & Critique approach; better-to-best modeling; SocraticBUILD™️

The Details

  • Learners watch a model conversation between a clinician and a patient in which the skills in focus are used by the clinician.

  • Learners watch another version of the same conversation – broken into sections - in which the clinician commits a common pitfall. They rate the clinician’s performance and compare their rating to their course guide’s rating. The course guide explains the reason for their rating.

  • Learners watch the model version of the same scene – broken into sections - to see specifically how the clinician’s language affect the patient’s response, and how the conversation progresses or stalls.
