Hourly Team Leader Training - Needs Assessment

The Client Need

“Our goal is to grow our next generation of leaders from the diverse pool of talent within the company—starting from the plant floor up. For that, we needed to create a program that teaches our hourly team leads the foundational skills they need to successfully lead now and in future roles.”

The Design

A leading multinational food manufacturer enlisted us to perform a needs assessment for a new learner audience: hourly team leaders working on the plant floor. We worked closely with the client to conduct a survey & focus groups to identify common pain points that come with the transition to leadership, and the skills & behaviors that help team leaders flourish. The findings were analyzed and distilled into a ranked list of performance objectives, which became the foundation of a first-of-its-kind Instructor-Led Training (ILT) for hourly team leads.

Audience: Newly promoted hourly team leaders

Skills in Focus: Lead by taking ownership; become a cultural champion; operate inclusively and with empathy; provide feedback; resolve conflicts; communicate strategically; prioritize; problem solve

Features: Needs analysis; focus group interviews; performance objectives; summary of findings

To complete the needs assessment, we:

  • Conducted nine 30–60-minute focus groups/interviews with project sponsors and a diverse array of expert advisors and stakeholders.

  • Captured key insights and identified desired behavioral changes across four learning domains.

  • Created a ranked list of skills/performance objectives for each of the four priority learning domains.
